Good news everybody

Pebble 2 Duo has now entered mass production. We’ve finished all the testing and design changes we need to make. Things are working very well!

Thank you to all the 100+ beta testers (wrists pictured above) who helped test the software and hardware. We learned about some important issues during testing and we were able to fix (🤞 hopefully all of) them.

We’re not out of the woods yet - we still need to manufacture all the watches over the next 2 months, but it’s still great news. There still may be delays - be prepared to wait to receive your watch.

Here’s the rough manufacturing and shipping schedule

  • first 300-500 units shipping out to lucky first pre-orders mid-September
  • larger 2nd batch at end of September
  • final shipments in October

Shipping takes ~ 1 week from our warehouse to your door.

This means people who are ‘Batch 1 - July’ pre-orders - your watch is currently scheduled to ship in September. ‘Batch 2 - August’ pre-orders - your watch is currently scheduled to ship in October.

Pebble 2 Duo waterproofing update

More good news! We’ve improved the design of Pebble 2 Duo to increase its water resistance, and we’ve updated our testing procedure to test each watch to a rated depth of 20 meters.

Let me immediately qualify that rating - we designed the watch to be exposed to water for brief periods of time but:

  • these are NOT dive watches. Do not dive with them. Do not expose them to water for long periods of time.
  • do not expose to hot water (hot tubs, hot showers etc). This will weaken the glue and eliminate the waterproof protection.
  • do not expose to high pressure water (direct shot from a shower head, hard slap against water)

We’ve tested the design with the following procedure. The basic idea is expose the watch to high pressure air, if the seals are broken then the air will enter the watch housing.

  • pressurize the watch in a container with air to 20m (~300kPa) for 3 minutes

  • dunk the watch under water

  • release the pressure

  • observe whether air bubbles come out of the watch

^ Here’s what it looked like before the design fix - there’s a continuous stream of bubbles coming from the speaker.

^ after the fix. No continuous stream of bubbles from the watch! A few bubbles escape, but this is air caught inside the outer exposed portion of the speaker. (The stream of bubbles on the right side is from the 3d printed stand we use to hold the watch in prototype testing)

What you need to know about Pebble 2 Duo

I think you all can sense the theme of this project. We tried to be as upfront and clear with people right from the start. We want to set people's expectations accordingly and make sure that everyone is happy with the outcome. It's incredibly awesome that Pebble is back, but there are going to be some differences from the last time around. There's no hundred-plus person company behind this project. It's just me and a few other brave souls. Ironically, that's actually one of the reasons why it's more likely to succeed long-term! I've been able to self-fund the project so far, and I don't expect to raise money from investors or anything. The goal is to be able to continue to produce these watches long into the future.

With that in mind, I wanted to create a blunt and honest summary of Pebble 2 Duo that you can read and review before you confirm your order.

  • Pebble 2 Duo is awesome. If you had a Pebble before, it's exactly how you remember it. It almost doesn't feel real that we've been able to bring Pebble back to life 10 years after everyone thought it would be gone forever! Every time I look down at my wrist I smile 🙂.
  • Everything that you love about Pebble is here: long battery life, amazing e-paper screen, buttons (!!!), fun quirky design and support for the entire 10,000+ existing apps and watchfaces catalog.
  • The new charger dongle is super small and easy to carry with a little hook. Thank you to Nomad Goods for letting us use their design! The backlight is fantastic. The speaker sounds surprisingly decent, given that it is fully waterproof.
  • The battery life of the current version of the software is only ~2 weeks right now, but we have a clear path to increasing that to 4 weeks. That’s 4x better than Pebble 2! We’ve confirmed the hardware can support this, it’s just software work now.
  • It runs all the old Pebble watch faces that you know and love. We've updated the SDK to make it super easy to use again, and we're even working on a new version of something like CloudPebble.
  • Health (steps and sleep tracking) just as good as it was before. It good, but if you want real health and fitness/GPS etc, you should probably get a Garmin or something.

Here’s the things to be aware of:

  • The strap is pretty basic. It works, it looks fine, but it's not the best strap in the world. Good news is that it's a standard 22mm quick-release watch strap. You can replace it with any other strap you want.
  • As I mentioned above, it's not a dive watch. You can wash hands with it on, be in the rain, dunk it in water, have a bath/shower, but I wouldn’t recommend exposing it to hot water (ie hot tubs) or submerge it for long periods of time.
  • The vibrating motor isn't as strong as I'd like it to be. It's quieter than the old motor for sure. We may be able to improve this in software by adjusting the vibration pattern.
  • Just like OG Pebble, and Pebble 2, you may notice slight amount of yellow around the edges of the display when the screen is off. This is a property of the optical adhesive used to bind the display to the front glass lens.
  • The buttons take a bit more force to press than Pebble 2. This is because we reinforced them to put less stress on the silicon.

We offer a 30-day warranty. We will ship you a replacement if there are any hardware defects or problems with it. We think this is a fantastic watch, and we stand behind it. But we can't stand up behind it forever - life happens.

We don't offer buyer's remorse refunds. The information about what Pebble does has been around for a decade now. You all should have a pretty good idea of what the product is and whether you want it. It's also very hard to do reverse logistics worldwide (ie getting watches returned). If you don't want a Pebble, please don't order one 😉.

Address and order confirmation email

Over the next few weeks, everyone who pre-ordered a Pebble 2 Duo will receive an email from [email protected] inviting them to click a link and enter more information to complete their order. Here’s some info about that process:

  • You can switch from Pebble 2 Duo to Pebble Time 2, with no additional payment needed at this time.
  • You can merge pre-orders that have the same email address, to save on shipping fees
  • Add-ons are available to purchase (extra straps, charge dongles and firmware development kit)
  • You must pay any duties, tariffs, VAT or taxes owed before shipping
  • After confirming your information, your order will be locked. You will not be able to refund after this, but you can change your address right up until your order ships using the same link.

Please do email us if you have any problems confirming your information after getting the email.

Please do not email us asking if your email has been sent out. Check your inbox and spam folder and wait for the email from [email protected].

FAQ

How are tariffs, VAT, taxes and duties handled?

All shipments are sent DDP (Delivered Duty Paid), which means that all taxes, duties, tariffs, and fees must be prepaid. You will simply receive your package in the mail with zero hassle - there will be no additional charges or customs forms to fill out when your package arrives.

How much are tariffs for US orders?

For shipments to the US, the tariff on each Pebble 2 Duo is $8.42.

What is the VAT + Handling Fee?

For shipments to the UK and EU countries, we include a small handling fee that covers the administrative costs of ensuring all taxes are properly paid at customs. This helps prevent your package from being held at customs and ensures you won't receive any unexpected tax bills after delivery. The handling fee is calculated as 3% of the combined duties/tariffs and VAT, plus $2.

Can I modify my order later?

After confirming your order, you can still modify your shipping address (except country) for Shipment 1 until your order is shipped. For Shipment 2 (Pebble Time 2), you can make changes up until it's ready to ship.

How will my order be shipped?

All shipments are sent via courier service. We will send you a tracking number as soon as your shipment is dispatched, allowing you to monitor your package's journey to your doorstep.

When can I choose my Pebble Time 2 color?

You'll be able to select the color for your Pebble Time 2 watch(es) closer to the shipment date. We'll contact you before your Pebble Time 2 order ships to confirm your color preferences and finalize the details for Shipment 2.
